6 Easy ways to Transfer Data Between iPhone and Mac

1. Using AirDrop

AirDrop is an effective way to quickly share data between iPhone and Mac. With AirDrop enabled on your Apple devices, you can share data with just a few clicks or taps.

  • From iPhone to Mac

Step 1: Open the file you want to share and click the Share icon (a square icon with an upward arrow) in the bottom left corner.

Step 2: Tap the Mac icon if you see or the AirDrop icon shows up in the bottom left corner. 

Step 3: On the next menu, select your Mac to start transferring files.

  • From Mac to iPhone

Step 1: Right-click the file you want to share.

Step 2: In the menu that appears, hover over the Share menu > AirDrop from the submenu.

Step 3: Click on the recipient’s iPhone from the list to send the file. 

Step 4: Click the Done button when finished.

2. Use iCloud Drive

To use iCloud Drive, you must set up iCloud Drive on your iPhone or Mac. Only then can you start transferring files.

  • From iPhone to Mac

Step 1: Open the file you want to share and click the Share icon (a square icon with an upward arrow) in the bottom left corner.

Step 2: Then swipe up from the bottom to scroll through the sharing options and select the Save to Files option.

Step 3: In the new menu that appears, select iCloud Drive under Locations.

Step 4: Click the Save button in the top right corner.

Step 5: On your Mac, open Finder and click the iCloud Drive option in the left pane and you should immediately see your files there.

  • From Mac to iPhone

Step 1: Copy the file you want to share to the iCloud Drive folder in Finder.

Step 2: On your iPhone, open the Files app.

Step 3: Click the Browse button in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Step 4: Select iCloud Drive from the list of options.

Step 5: Click on the three horizontal dots menu in the top right corner of the screen and press Select.

Step 6: Click on the file you want to transfer.

Step 7: Click the Share button – a square icon with an arrow pointing up in the bottom left corner. 

A quick tip: You can also long-press the file, then choose the Share option in the menu that appears.

Step 8: Choose how you want to transfer the file, it can be Save Image if it’s an image, Save Video if it’s a video or another option for a different file type.

3. Using Finder  

Another way to share data between iPhone and Mac is to sync through the Finder, using a USB cable or a Wi-Fi connection.

  • Using a USB cable

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your Mac using a USB cable.

A quick tip: iPhone may display a prompt to choose to trust your Mac once it’s plugged in. Click the  Trust button, enter your iPhone’s lock screen password if you’ve set it, and then iPhone will appear in the Finder on your Mac.

Step 2: Fire up the Finder app on your Mac and click on your iPhone‘s name on the left side under Locations.

Step 3: On the right, click the Files tab at the top to see a list of iPhone apps that contain files on them.

Step 4: Click the arrow to the right next to the application to display its files.

Step 5: Drag and drop the file you want to share somewhere on your computer, be it in a folder or on the Desktop.

Step 6: To transfer files from Mac to iPhone, drag and drop files from your computer into the app in Finder. Make sure the app supports drag-and-drop files. 

  • Using Wi-Fi

First, you need to make sure Finder can detect your iPhone over a Wi-Fi connection.

Step 1: Connect iPhone to Mac using a USB cable.

Step 2: Fire up the Finder app on your Mac and click on your iPhone‘s name on the left side under Locations.

Step 3: Click the General tab from the right pane, scroll down and click the Show this iPhone when on Wi-Fi option.

Step 4: Click the Apply button in the bottom right corner of the Finder window.

Now, when you connect your iPhone and Mac via Wi-Fi, Finder will detect it without an Internet connection. Then you can transfer files between the two devices.

Step 1: Make sure your iPhone and Mac are signed in to the same Apple ID and that you have enabled personal hotspots on your iPhone.

Step 2: On a Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar at the top, then select your iPhone’s personal hotspot from the list of options.

Step 3: Fire up the Finder app on your Mac and click on your iPhone‘s name on the left under Locations.

Step 4: On the right, click the Files tab at the top to see a list of apps on iPhone that contain files on it.

Step 5: Click the arrow to the right next to the application to display its files.

Step 6: Drag and drop the file you want to share somewhere on your computer, be it in a folder or on the Desktop.

Step 7: To transfer files from Mac to iPhone, drag and drop files from your computer into the app in Finder. Make sure the app sustains drag-and-drop files. 

4. Use Google Drive

Google Drive is one of many cloud storage solutions you can use to transfer data between your iPhone and Mac. Approximated to other cloud storage services, Google’s service offers all user accounts 15GB of free storage. 

Once you get started with Google Drive, you can upload the data you want to share to Drive from your computers and mobile devices. You can then download a file or an entire folder from Google Drive on your Mac or iPhone.

5. Use Email

Email is the traditional and popular choice in the past as a solution to share data between devices. However, there is a limitation when using email services that is the maximum file size limit for sharing is quite low. 

  • From iPhone to Mac

Step 1: Open the file you want to share and click the Share icon (a square icon with an upward arrow) in the bottom left corner.

Step 2: Select the default iOS email app (Mail) or the email app you want to use for sharing. Then, fill in the email entries and send them to yourself.

Step 3: On your Mac, open the email app and view the email message you just sent yourself with the attached files. Attachments can then be downloaded from here.

  • From Mac to iPhone

Step 1: Open the Email app you use often, create a new email and attach the file to share, then send that email to yourself.

Step 2: On your iPhone, open your favorite email app and view that email message. From here you will have the option to view the attachments and save them to your phone.

6. Using Image Capture

Image Capture is an application that Apple integrates into macOS that allows you to quickly download photos from devices such as cameras or iPhones to your Mac. Of course, your iPhone must be unlocked for Image Capture to work.

Step 1: Connect iPhone to Mac using a USB cable.

Step 2: On a Mac, click your iPhone’s name from the menu on the left side of the Image Capture app.

Step 3: You can now choose where to transfer your images to your Mac, or any other device connected to the app. Depending on your needs, you can transfer all photos or select specific photos.
