Android devices hardly see the latest version of the OS. What about iOS and other systems?

Recently, the search giant shared new statistics on the fragmentation of the Android OS. It turned out that the current 13th version of the “green robot” managed to reach only 5.2% of devices five months after the release. How is the situation with other popular operating systems?

Android and iOS

Despite the efforts of vendors to release operational updates, Android 13 has so far reached sixth place in terms of prevalence since its release in August 2022. Android 11 remains the most popular version, running a quarter (24.4%) of all Android smartphones. In second place is Android 10 with a share of 19.5%. Last year’s Android 12 (including modification for 12L tablets) closes the top three with 18.9%.

The fourth position is occupied by Android 9.0 Pie – the system of 2018 is installed on 13.2% of gadgets. The share of Android 8.0 has fallen to 9.5%, but the OS is still ahead of the thirteenth version (5.2%). This is followed by 7.0 Nougat (3.7%), 6.0 Marshmallow (2.8%), 5.0 Lollipop (2.1%), and 4.4 KitKat (0.7%). Very old releases like JellyBean left the list altogether. However, Google statistics only take into account those devices from which Google Play was opened at least once in the last week. This means that the infographic does not cover HUAWEI phones and models of some Chinese brands for the domestic market.

As for iOS, the distribution is markedly different. The most common version remains iOS 16.1 (40.4%), released on October 24, 2022. The second place was taken by iOS 15.6 (14.77%), and the third — was by iOS 16.0 (13.39%). Also in the ranking is iOS 15.7 (6.39%), which is still used on older iPhone models. The current stable build – iOS 16.2 – is installed on 4.43% of iPhones.

Windows and macOS

Consider how quickly users of desktop operating systems update. As of December 2022, the top ten is the most popular among Windows computers at 67.95%. It is immediately followed by Windows 11 with a share of 16.97%. It is worth expecting that its percentage will soon increase, because Microsoft will stop selling Windows 10 licenses on its website from January 31, 2023.

The third position is held by Windows 7, it is used by 11.2% of PC owners. The fourth and fifth places are occupied by Windows 8.1 (2.6%) and the usual “eight” (0.66%), respectively. But the retired Windows XP remains with a share of 0.49%. In the case of macOS, exact market percentages are more difficult to track, as Apple, according to rumors reports incorrect data for some versions. But we can say that macOS Catalina 10.15 and Big Sur 11 are the most common now with a total share of 87.89%. They are followed in the ranking by High Sierra 10.13 (3.83%), Mojave 10.14 (3.67%), and Sierra 10.12 (1.57%).
